Composition: Parchment, No. 1 brings together broad passages of ochre, cream, muted green and softened blue-grey, loosely divided by dark, fluid lines that travel across the surface. At times the lines follow the painted forms beneath them; elsewhere they seem to break away entirely, creating a composition that feels instinctive, layered and continually in motion.
There is a compelling tension between the weight of the colour and the freedom of the line. Shapes appear, overlap and dissolve into one another, allowing the eye to find its own path through the painting rather than settling on a single focal point.
