Composition: Pearl, No. 1 unfolds through layers of softly shifting colour, moving between pearly creams, muted lavender, smoky blue-grey and traces of warm ochre. At its centre, the palette becomes increasingly luminous, creating the impression of light gathering within the painting rather than simply falling across it.
Small, overlapping passages build a richly textured surface, with colour appearing to emerge, recede and dissolve as the eye moves across the composition. There is no fixed form to follow; instead, the piece is held together by atmosphere, allowing subtle changes in tone and texture to create its sense of depth.
